Ornamental Shrubs of California Description

Ornamental Shrubs of California, first published in 1962, is a classic guide for identifying 277 native and introduced species of shrubs used for landscaping purposes. Beginning with an extensive glossary of botanical terms and followed by the author's helpful drawings of plant parts, a key to each shrub species is presented. The bulk of the book are the detailed descriptions of each shrub, plus line drawings of 181 species. From the Preface: “Ornamental Shrubs of California is intended primarily for students, teachers, nurserymen, gardeners, landscape architects, home owners and amateur botanists who often find the standard manuals of plant identification too technical for easy use.”

Author Leonid Enari, born in Estonia in 1904, was a long-time botanist with the Los Angeles County Arboretum, where he worked until his retirement in 1982. In addition to his research interests and teaching duties, Enari was called on hundreds of times each year by the medical community to identify plants responsible for human poisoning. Dr. Enari died in 2004.
