Safety Allen making mark with Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles rookie safety Nate Allen, one of several former USF players making their NFL debuts Sunday, is already having his presence felt at the next level.
Allen, the 37th pick in April’s draft, intercepted Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the Eagles’ 27-20 opening day loss to the Packers.
Allen, who earned his way into the starting lineup during the offseason, finished second on the team with five tackles.
Former USF star defensive end George Selvie, a seventh-round pick by the St. Louis Rams, had two tackles in his debut. The Rams lost to the Arizona Cardinals 17-13.
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, the highest draft pick in USF history (15th overall), made his New York Giants’ debut, recording two tackles. Pierre-Paul is listed as a third-teamer at end on the depth chart.
Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell, a sixth-round pick by Cleveland, was on the bubble of earning a roster spot with the Browns after he struggled catching the ball in preseason, according to the Akron-Beacon Journal. Mitchell, who opted to forgo his senior season at USF, was listed on the inactive list before the Browns’ 17-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Mike Jenkins, the second highest pick in USF history when he was selected by Dallas 25th overall in the 2008 draft, started at corner and had two tackles and one pass defensed Sunday night in the Cowboys’ 13-7 loss to the Washington Redskins.
Bulls honored
USF men’s soccer standout Aubrey Perry has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week after helping the Bulls to consecutive 2-0 shutouts last week.
Perry, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound junior defender from Ocoee, anchors a USF defense that has posted three consecutive shutouts.
Volleyball standouts Allie Boaz and Janice Rivera were named to the Saluki Invitational All-Tournament team after their performances over the weekend.
Boaz, a senior, had 33 kills in three games, including 19 against Mississippi State on Saturday.
Rivera, a junior, led the team with 42 digs in the tournament. USF dropped two of three matches and is now 3-5 on the season.
