Both the USF baseball team and Red McEwen field are going to have a busy spring break.
The Bulls host seven games in 10 days, starting with three games against Illinois this weekend. Game 1 is tonight at 7.
After Illinois, the Bulls play a game against Pennsylvania on Tuesday before a three-game series against Massachusetts.
Tonight’s game against the Fighting Illini is the second of a 15-game home stand.
USF doesn’t go on the road again until March 30.
The Bulls won the first of the lengthy home game stretch against Northeastern (4-1) on Tuesday.
Playing at home has been an advantage for the Bulls this season. USF is 5-0 at Red McEwen Field and has won those games by an average of 4.8 runs.
USF (7-4) won their first four games in five days to start the season.
The next two weekends the Bulls were on the road and dropped four of six.
They enter the break with momentum after the win against Northeastern.
Matt McHargue is leading the offense with three home runs and 11 RBI. Shortstop Myron Leslie leads the team in hits with 14, doubles (five), and stolen bases (four).
The young pitching staff has so far been impressive.
Freshmen Nick Manganaro and Chase Lirette are both 2-0, leading all pitchers in wins. Georgia Tech transfer Kyle Schmidt leads all pitchers in strikeouts with 20 in 16 1/3 innings.
Closer Joey Livingston moved to third all-time after he recorded his fourth save of the season against Northeastern, the 25th save of his career.
