Hobbie’s decision leaves vacancy
Following USF offensive coordinator Mike Hobbie’s decision to resign on Monday, running backs coach Carl Franks and quarterbacks coach Rod Smith are among the front-runners to fill the vacant offensive coordinator slot, according to a source at USF.
Franks, who coached Duke from 1999-2002 before joining the Bulls last spring, spent 12 years under Steve Spurrier (at Duke and Florida), mostly as running backs coach. Smith has been quarterbacks coach since 2001.
Hobbie, who ran the offense since the Bulls started Division-I play in 2001, resigned to enter the real estate business.
“Mike did a fabulous job for us,” Leavitt said. “I know he’s going to pursue some business interests and I know he’ll be very successful. We will never be able to repay him for everything he’s done for our program.”
In his first year at the helm of the offense, Hobbie’s spread offense ranked 13 in the nation, averaging 35.2 points.
But in his final two seasons, Hobbie saw those numbers drop. Last season, the Bulls had the 13th worst passing-efficiency offense, and in 2003, USF had the 11th worst offense.
