Glenn Beck is spreading dangerous ideas

It’s troubling that according to Nielsen Media Research, Fox News commentator Glenn Beck has the highest rated cable news show in the 25 to 54-year-old age range.

Beck continuously proves to be an ideologue bent on distortion, conspiracy and fear. His spectacular claims — however real or imaginary — portray a nation in crisis and increase the possibility of violence from neoconservatives.

Beck seems to have a penchant for conjuring up discontent among his viewers, especially now that conservatives are in the political wilderness.

Back in the early ’90s, during Bill Clinton’s presidency, reactionary extremism played out through the Oklahoma City bombing as well as the Waco, Texas disaster with the Branch Davidians. These events followed 12 years of Republican rule, as discontented right-wing militias emerged and reacted to perceived threats.

Conservative extremism may already be resurfacing. In April, Richard Poplawski shot and killed three police officers in Pittsburgh. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he was convinced that the nation was run by a secret group of individuals who were trying to eradicate freedom of speech, confiscate his guns and use the returning military to enslave the population. This is an example of the disillusionment and anxiety felt by some as the political spectrum moves to the left.

On Aug. 31, during Beck’s morning radio show, he compared the 2008 U.S. elections to the Communist Cuban revolution and claimed, “Most of America doesn’t have a clue as to what’s going on. There is a coup going on. There is a stealing of America, and the way it is done, it has been through the — the guise of an election, but they lied to us the entire time.”

This type of rhetoric exemplifies Beck’s willingness to incite angry conservatives, who certainly don’t need more encouragement. A large number of his claims seem to have no base in reality. On Friday’s show, Beck insinuated that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) was involved in the destruction of the New Orleans levees during Hurricane Katrina.

While talking to a caller, Beck said, “What are the odds that ACORN SEIU (Service Employees International Union) are involved in the corruption locally ... If you were an organization or a city that was just riddled with corruption and you knew it, and everybody knew it, and there was all kinds of funny things going on and a hurricane blew through, wouldn’t it be convenient if all of your records were destroyed?” After a gasp, the caller responded, “It’s just the perfect setup.”

Despite the lunacy of his programs, Beck has experienced recent success in his attack on the “Green Jobs Czar,” Anthony Van Jones. For weeks, Beck has been hammering the fact that Van Jones was a member of Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM).

STORM is a group that sympathized with Maoist-inspire peasant movements throughout the world and organized to protest police brutality, according to the Huffington Post.

Van Jones wrote The Green Collar Economy, a New York Times bestselling book, and was eventually named as the special adviser for green jobs at the Council on Environmental Quality by President Barack Obama. Van Jones resigned during the controversy created by Beck, an indication of the political influence he maintains.

Color of Change, the self-proclaimed, “largest African American online political organization in the country,” is one group reacting to Beck’s far-right statements.

Last month, during an appearance on Fox and Friends morning show, Beck claimed that Obama was a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people,” clearly crossing the line again.

Color of Change organized a movement to get sponsors of Beck’s show to pull their ads. In a press release last week, the group announced a total of 62 sponsors who ceased placing ads during Beck’s programming, including Campbell’s Soup, GEICO, Kraft, Radio Shack, Walmart and UPS, among others. The organization has also accumulated over 180,000 signatures on a petition urging companies to cut off their advertising on Beck’s show.

The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 states, “The promotion of violent radicalization, homegrown terrorism and ideologically-based violence exists in the United States and poses a threat to homeland security.”

The Act created a congressional commission, which became the Center for Excellence for the Prevention of Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism, under the Department of Homeland security.

This Act shows that many congressional leaders understand the dangers of ideological violence on U.S. soil, as it passed the House of Representatives 405 to 6.

While organized Islamic extremists may still pose a threat, the newest brand of terrorism may come from home.

There are many who believe every word coming out of Beck’s mouth. The anger, mistrust and distortions continue to grow, as does the threat posed on American security. Our freedom of speech may now come at a great cost, but exactly how much remains to be seen.

Why is it that every time someone speaks out against Obama it Racist. The media threw this guy ground ball questions during the Campaign and continues the same as President.....all because of the fear of being labeled racist for asking legit questions. So much for transparency .

All the other news media blowhards and the liberal wing can only do one thing..vall beck a nut and try to make fun of him. Yet..not one..I repeat..not one of them have been able to refute any of the things he has been showing on his nightly broadcast. His charts and linkings have yet to be denied or proven wrong. If beck can do this type of research...why can't MSNBC or CNN or any of the other liberal media? Olberman has never proven a thing wrong and is one of the biggest clowns and maddow should go back to doing air america, another shill who can't prove a thing.

I am not a republican nor a democrat (throw out the 2 party system). I watch ALL the news, call me a news junkie. It seems in my objective opinion that Obama's comments and his involvement in well for example the local Cambridge issue make or ACORN, maybe Glen Beck does have a point. Another good point is no Republican would have the soft ball questions that Obama gets (except the 1 question during the recent George Stephanopoulos interview). The media is doing a disservice to the American public. It is not all roses and candy in this administration and it isn't all rotton either. Tell us what is really going on and if there is truely a desire for transparentcy let us see the legislation before it is signed, we aren't idiots, but we don't want pork spending or ridiculous rules in it either.

I was sort of upset that this article was written, but then I remembered that everyone has a right to say what they want. If a person wants to call someone a racist with no support, that is just the sound of freedom. Justin, you never once produced evidence of true racism. Since when is there a double standard on racism? Last time I checked a black person can call anyone a racist without becomimg a racist themselves. If you want to call his ideas dangerous and inciting violence, I want real examples. Poplawski is no different than any other conservative extremist that has been sitting in the back woods of Arkansas planning revolutions (against conservatives and liberals alike). There is no way you can attribute his actions to incitement from Beck, it's heresay. I suggest you stop mud slinging and actually take a look at how we can mend the huge divide that there is in our country. Now that is something I would like to read. Also, Charles was just being satircal Whitney.

I love it when people come out with stuff like "Liberals just don't know how to deal with the truth." What truth are you referring to exactly. Truth is a highly subjective term folks, just because you say something is true, that does not make it so.

For the ones who think he is spread fear are you nuts, look at a whole program. He tells it how it is he wants us to see the whole pic as he has more people looking into everything that is going on. You have to look on line when he says something then i look it up and he is 100% on the ball. He loves his country and the founding fathers who started it I am with him. Everyone in this country needs to watch Beck, all I have to say "If you love this country stand up America the left and the right need to be accountatable."

Who pays you to say that Beck is spreading hatred? There is no way you can listen to an entire show of his and believe that. Or do you just get your info from mediamatters? I mean, seriously. Get informed, your country is falling apart all around you and you are stuck in your bubble of party loyalty, too blind and uneducated to see what is happening.

Glen Beck is a disgrace to American Broadcasting for preaching hatred and can lead to violence. I am alarmed that the FCC hasn"t stepped in when somebody continues to talk up a storm inciting racial hatred. Free speech is ok as long as it doesn"t infringe on the rights of others.

It is frightening that some consider Beck's hatred as political discourse.

"Dangerous Ideas" - really? How desperate for "news" are you? First Amendment was passed because of people like you that so hastily refuse that which goes against status quo....even if the new perspective is just. Take off your blinders and listen to what he is saying even if it makes you uncomfortable. Sure, he is an entertainer, and a good one at that, but that does not constitute a justification for ignoring the truths he does typically illuminate.

Since when has the liberals felt threatened by questions? Beck has been asking questions, fair and simple. Perhaps the problem is not with the questions, but with the liberals having an appropriate and truthful answer. "Oh yeah, your a racist!", get real...

TO CHARLES-
Wow! Are you joking!? I really hope so, because the things that you've just said scare the crap out of me. You are completely over emotional, totally irrational, and not the least bit objective! Here is the definition of a BIGOT from dictionary.com: noun- a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion. This sounds just like you! You need to do some serious soul searching. And by the way, you might want to get your news from more than just MSNBC. Just a suggestion.

The TRUTH hurts.. Stop acting like a bunch of lemmings! While "colleged" students are losing sleep over the poor polar bears and preparing for the apocalypse, we normal college students have taken off our blinders and see that the polar bears are going to be just fine, the earth most likely isn't going to explode tomorrow and Obama is actually not the second coming of Christ.. Glen Beck is simply stating these things to a much larger audience.

It appears that the author of this article just has hurt feelings that Beck is dominating the ratings. Maybe the name "Justin Rivera" is Anderson Cooper's new alias.. lol

I guess the truth really does hurt. The people on the far left never seem to know what to do when the truth hits them in the face, except to attack the people who are telling the truth.
I have not been able to have a civil conversation with anyone that has voted for Obama without them bringing up Bush or now the new word is racist.

If the people on the left think calling us racist is going to somehow "quiet" us you are so wrong. We see that as your weakness, proving you now have no other way to shut us down because you know we are telling the truth.

There is some much on video and in written material we just need to bring it to light as Glen Beck is doing and the leaders you are so happy with will just hang themselves with their own words.

I'm actually more worried about the 100,000 or so people who believe every word that comes out of President Obama's mouth. Ron Paul 2012.

Keith Olbermann has continuously proven Beck wrong and points out that Beck perpetuates hate and demonizes the other side during his “Worst Person In the World” segment time and time again! Can’t you conservatives get it?

Maddow, another true, honest, public spirited, anti-profit, unbiased reporter exposes Beck’s fallacies as Olbermann does, but really focuses in on how racist Glenn Beck and his followers are. I mean, we have a black president, so obviously anyone who is against his agenda must be in the Ku Klux Klan, and must not have any legitimate concerns over His government policies, even if they believe that the Constitution really doesn’t give the Federal government a lot of power. Or, they didn’t get the memo that this government is undoubtedly unstained by any corruption whatsoever. Don’t you ignorant REDNECKS get it? You RACISTS! YALL need to watch the true news, MSNBC.

Thank you for writing this Justin. It has fortified my beliefs that anyone who agrees with Glenn Beck is a right-wing extremist and I am appalled that there are so many on this institution of higher learning who believes that diversity in thought is a GOOD thing! We cannot have people running around believing that the government lies to us!!!

To Justin- I highly suggest you read a small book called, The New Imperialism, by David Harvey. Please read it objectively, and don't be scared and make assumptions. Finish the whole book. It may help you to better understand the world around you. You need to learn to think in a more objective manner, and also make an effort to learn all sides to a story/issue. PLEASE READ THE BOOK!

Any man who is under 30 and is not a Liberal has no heart; and
any man who is over 30 and not a Conservative has no brains.
- Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

We have an excess of brainless people voting these days.
