A different kind of sorority

AN UNCONVENTIONAL SISTERHOOD IS TRYING TO CHANGE HOW PEOPLE VIEW GREEK LIFE

They have piercings and tattoos and they dress in worn jeans and colorful sweatshirts. The women of Theta Nu Pi (TNPi) say they do not fit the typical "sorority girl" image, and they couldn't be happier.

"We're not those cliché sorority girls," said Ashley Davidson, a junior majoring in anthropology and secretary of the organization, proudly displaying her arm-length tattoo and facial piercings. "They look at me, and they're like, ‘What? How is that possible?'"

TNPi members say they're trying to be different than the Greek world. The sorority, founded at USF in 2008, is also unique in that it doesn't require members to pay dues.

"Right now, we only have about 14 active members, so we're pretty small," said TNPi public relations chair and treasurer Amanda Haun, a sophomore majoring in psychology. "However, since we have a smaller organization, it enables us to really get to know all of the sisters."

The organization is funded by student-paid Activity and Service Fees (A&S), Davidson said. Like every other student organization on campus, they request a portion of the fees from Student Government yearly for their budget.

This provides students, who would otherwise be limited by finances, to join Greek life and pay fees. For this reason, TNPi has made it a goal to never charge dues, Davidson said.

"I wasn't able to be part of an organization because I make minimum wage and can only work 20 hours a week. There's no possible way I would have been able to afford that type of camaraderie," she said. "TNPi doesn't restrict people like that."

One of the main cornerstones of the organization is philanthropic work. Chapter president Kelly Campana, a senior majoring in humanities, said it's important to work in partnership with other organizations that serve the campus and community to raise awareness of equality issues.

"Our mission statement is, ‘We are the change we wish to see in the world: creative individuals working collectively for all,'" Campana said. "Our members come from a variety of different walks of life, and we use our differences to promote equality for all no matter their age, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, spiritual tradition, expression of individuality, sexuality, ability and gender."

TNPi has participated in a number of events, including Chi Omega's Chili Cook-Off, Kappa Delta Kelly Erin Reen Memorial Bowling Tournament and FSA Rock for Choice & Day of Silence.

"In 10 years, I hope that TNPi has continued to grow here at USF as well as at other universities," Campana said.

Membership to TNPi is open during the fall and spring recruitment periods for USF students. For more information, send e-mails to ThetaNuPi@gmail.com.

Panhellenic women do so much more then anyone gives them credit for. I am not greek, but some of my best friends are. I am very offended by the statements on here which says that Soririty girls are rich whiny brats. My friend is on scholarship for the school and her sorority. Not all the greek girls are rich and spoiled. Grow up!!!!!!!! They do not party and get drunk all the time. Sop being jelious of them ans judging them based on what you see a limited pool of the greek girls do!

Hey Dave if its a stereotype for a reason then lets stereotype your average USF male student:
Lives at campus lodge with 3 of his best bros who go to HCC
has a 2.61 GPA
Drinks 4 nights a week hosting "ragers" at his apartment, which usually ends with the cops being called
Gives nothing back to the University or the University Community whatsoever
Will graduate in 5.5 years with nothing but a lot of kegs drank at his appartment and bong hits.

Frankly I'd rather be stereotyped as someone who supports the University, gives back to the community, has academic standards higher than the average GPA. Your point about acting up when the university isnt looking is moot - I challenge you to go to ANY appartment complex around USF on a Thurs/Fri/Sat night and you will see much worse behavior from the afromentioned average USF joe. USF's policing of greek life is almost nazi-like - head to any "real" school and you will be amazed.

I find it offensive how the comments further sterotype these women. Pick up trucks? Kicking butt?

I'm in a "traditional" sorority but welcome these women to greek life - and I suggest you do the same. Stereotyping these girls as pick up driving butt kicking alternative lifestyle living people just proves how ignorant you are. and I love how the poster blow me uses the word girls in quotation marks as if they really aren't women.

you all should be ashamed of yourselves. Why not get to know these women before making judgments about their beliefs, values and behaviors?

Frat members need to face the facts. Everyone on this campus is not stupid. The stereotype exists for a reason, and its not just because of the way the media portrays you. We've all seen the way you guys (and your female counterparts) behave at Acropolis, Tia's, and Bulls Club when University admins aren't around, and we've all seen the way you treat non fraternity members and people who dropped out of pledging.

More power to the TNPi girls for starting a group that supports alternative lifestyles.

Perhaps instead of stereotyping this organization based on a blurb, you actually educate yourselves on their beliefs and what they are trying to do for the community.

PS: You don't have to be in any organization to be a drunk slob.

PPS: They'll be sure to kick some butt in their pickup trucks.

Although they did not say it explicitly, the comment "There’s no possible way I would have been able to afford that type of camaraderie,” she said. “TNPi doesn’t restrict people like that.” is stereotyping all Greek organizations. Not all sororities (or fraternities) are the same. Dues are not just to pay for "camaraderie". It goes for necessary things that allow the chapter to run. Recruitment is also free for a lot of Greek organizations. I can tell from the descriptions that Theta Nu Pi strives to recognize the individual, then they should look at all the Greek organizations individually instead of doing the one thing they are against- stereotyping.

They should be given a house in the Greek Village area. Good way to change the spoiled drunken rich kids attitudes. Some little entitled child pukes on their front door these chicks could kick some serious butt
