Pedestrian struck overnight at 50th and Fowler

A pedestrian was struck and killed crossing Fowler Avenue at the intersection of 50th Street and Fowler late Wednesday night.

The pedestrian, believed to be a homeless woman between 40 and 50 years of age, failed to see a vehicle approaching in the eastbound lane as she crossed from the university side to the MOSI side of Fowler Avenue, according to Tampa Police Department. The still unidentified pedestrian was struck at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The driver told TPD he did not see the woman before he struck her with his front bumper. The woman was taken to Tampa General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. She is not believed to be a USF student, TPD spokeswoman Andrea Davis said in an email to The Oracle.

Although the investigation is ongoing, no charges have been filed against the driver.
