Greek Village could potentially have some new residents this fall, as the Department of Housing and Residential Education began the application process for Greek organizations to bid to live in the former Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) house.

The three-story house, which contains 28 bed spaces, has been occupied by overflow transfer students after SAE was forced to leave the building after being found in violation of university policies including harassment, hazing and a failure to adhere to organization, local and national policies.

An application for the house in Greek Village was emailed to all the registered Greek chapters on campus and posted on the main website for the Department of Housing and Residential Education on Monday.

One fraternity president, who said his fraternity is talking about applying for the house, Theta Chi President David Laird, a senior majoring in sociology, said members of his fraternity currently live in various locations.

We need a central location for our brotherhood to meet, Laird said. We have our chapter meetings and plan activities for the campus community throughout the year, and a location on campus for us to meet would be helpful. We just need to determine if this is the best option financially and logistically for us.

According to the housing website, the lease will include a non-refundable $25,000 buy-in fee to join Greek Village and will be for an initial term of five years, which can be renewed up to five times for five years at a time. The total annual lease rate for the house for the 2012-2013 year is $199,916, which is paid for by the local chapters.

The owner of the house will be finalized on April 19, after a master lease is signed over to the Greek organization, which will be decided by a series of presentations to the evaluation committee after the application deadline. Chapters will be notified of their application status on March 29.

Only Greek organizations registered with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life are eligible for residency in Greek Village. Once an organization is chosen, future occupants in the house can move in as early as August 2013.

According to the Housing website, an information session will take place Feb. 12 in the Maple C Classroom for Greek organizations to learn more about the process. Applications are due Feb. 25 at 5 p.m., after which an evaluation committee will meet to review applications.

The Department of Housing and Residential Education declined to comment in person or via phone.
