USF drops FAU

It’s usually USF guard Andrea Smith leading the way for the Bulls, but Tuesday night her sister stole the spotlight.

Junior guard Andrell Smith scored 23 points to help USF breeze past Florida Atlantic 80-46 at the Sun Dome.

Smith shot 66 percent (10-of-15 shooting) from the floor and had three steals and four rebounds.

Andrea Smith added 18 points, five steals and six rebounds.

“We needed more from (Andrell Smith) scoring with (Jasmine) Wynne being out tonight, so we just moved her to the wing spot, so I think that gave her more opportunity to get shots,” coach Jose Fernandez said. “She got a lot of her shots off transition.”

The Bulls outrebounded the Owls 59 to 27 and scored 29 points off turnovers. They also shot 44 percent from the floor and held FAU to 31 percent shooting.

USF opened the game with a 19-4 run, and put together a 12-1 run to go up 31-9 with 4:50 remaining in the first half.

Next up for the Bulls is defending champion No.1 Connecticut, who brings an 84-game win streak to the Sun Dome on Thursday.

“I told our girls they can be part of something special and they have the opportunity to break the streak,” Fernandez said. “We’re going have to get off to a good start offensively.”
