Soccer signee to play for U.S. national team

Incoming USF men’s soccer freshman Hasani Sinclair has been selected to play for the United States U-18 national team. The team will open play in Northern Ireland’s Milk Cup on July 27 against Denmark.

Sinclair, a Coral Springs native, was named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year in 2008 as a high school senior.

Sinclair is the second Bull to be selected for a national team in the past two weeks, joining senior midfielder Francisco Aristeguieta, who was invited to train with the Venezuela national team before its match with Mexico on June 24 in Atlanta.

Sinclair scored 47 goals and had 14 assists as a senior at American Heritage High School, which won the class 2A state championship last year.

“This is a tremendous honor for Hasani,” said USF coach George Kiefer in a statement. “We are thrilled that he will have this opportunity to go overseas and play against some quality international competition before he arrives on our campus here at USF.”

Men’s basketball home and away schedule announced

The Big East Conference unveiled its home and away schedule for the 2009-10 men’s basketball season.

Each school plays 12 teams once and three other teams twice, a format that’s been in place since the league expanded to 16 teams last season. Each team has 18 conference games.

Highlighting USF’s road schedule are perennial powerhouses Villanova, Louisville and Syracuse. The Bulls face Connecticut and Pittsburgh at home. USF plays Notre Dame, Cincinnati and Providence twice, once home and once away each.

Also coming to the Sun Dome will be West Virginia, Seton Hall and St. John’s.

Volleyball schedule released

The USF volleyball team revealed its 2009 schedule Thursday.

The Bulls face an out-of-conference schedule that includes Minnesota, Florida, Miami and UCF.

USF, which finished 17-14 last year, opens the season in the Miami Tournament with games against Prairie View A&M, Florida Gulf Coast and Miami.

The Bulls will play seven Big East home matches. USF finished 6-2 in the Big East at home last season, earning a Big East tournament appearance.

“The 2009 schedule is exciting and challenging,” said USF coach Claire Lessinger in a statement. “With the return of five seniors and five starters, I felt very confident about scheduling a bit tougher this year. To be the best you have to play the best and eventually beat the best – we at least will have those opportunities this fall.”
