University Police wins pursuit SUV

University Police placed first in a Florida Department of Transportation Competition for the enforcement of seatbelts, speeding and DUI laws. UP’s prize was a 2008 Chevy Tahoe — known as the “ultimate patrol vehicle” — one of the few SUVs in the state suited for high-speed car chases.

The Tahoe has flashing lights on its top, sides and bottom. It also has a siren, called the “rumbler,” that has a subwoofer to cause vibrations. This siren can be heard and felt by pedestrians who might be distracted by their MP3 players.

The vehicle is the sole property of UP and was referred to as the “Star Wars of police vehicles” by Operations Commander Captain Bob Staehle.
