Depth chart released

The Bulls, just days from starting their 10th football season, unveiled the depth chart for their home opener Saturday against McNeese State. Or rather, they unveiled most of it.

The position of starting quarterback is still in limbo between redshirt freshman Matt Grothe and senior Pat Julmiste. Coach Jim Leavitt has said both quarterbacks are even through most of the fall drills and scrimmages. But he has also said if they remain even until Saturday, Julmiste would get the nod because of experience. Julmiste has started 23 games in three years.

However, the go-ahead from Leavitt will come at the last minute Saturday.

“Right before we take the first snap (is probably when I’ll announce a starter,” Leavitt said.

Still working: The right guard starting position is up for grabs for the rest of this week, as the depth chart has either junior Walt Walker or sophomore Matt Huners listed.

Senior Thed Watson, who was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List for best interior lineman, is not listed on the depth chart. Also missing from the chart is senior defensive lineman Tavarious Robinson. Leavitt said earlier this month the two might redshirt, but has also said he will remain mum on the subject till a few weeks into the season.

Moving on up: With the recent suspensions of wide receiver Jackie Chambers, defensive end Josh Julmiste and running back Ricky Ponton due to team drug violations, the depth chart has many backup players in starting positions.

Junior Treco Bellamy has stepped into Julmiste’s role, while senior Walt Smith is now listed second behind redshirt freshman Moise Plancher. Chambers is still listed on the depth chart, but is now behind senior Ean Randolph.

Bulls’ notes: Florida transfer Julian Riley, who earlier this summer got a waiver from the NCAA in order to play this season, is listed second at nose tackle behind junior Allen Cray. The Bulls’ three starting wide receivers are listed as sophomore Marcus Edwards, Randolph and senior S.J. Green. … Running back Keeley Dorsey, who had not been cleared academically, participated in practice Monday.
