New & Noteworthy for the week ahead

Black Heritage Festival
Jan. 15-18/ Various Locations/ Donations

By the time you read this, Black Heritage Festival Week will be in full swing. So get up, get out and do something. Tonight, catch Antwone Fisher — no Denzel, sorry — who will be speaking at the USF Student Services Center. The real gem of the week, however, might be Friday’s “Black On Black Rhyme,” the festival’s first annual “Poetry Slam” which is to be held downtown, on Tampa Street. And if you can’t catch either of those, be sure to hit this weekend’s street festival, right in your backyard here at USF. There will be employment opportunities, African art galleries and some damn good eats.

Marquee Lighting Celebration
Jan. 16/ Tampa Theatre/ Free

Tampa’s best artistic landmark, and quite possibly its most beautiful piece of architecture, gets a makeover. Mayor Pam Iorio will be on hand to flip the switch on Tampa Theatre’s refurbished, lighted movie marquee in front of a crowd of hundreds. This final step in the process of restoring the Theatre’s 1934 look is not to be missed. There is even a free screening of West Side Story after the ceremony. This one says date night all over it. Bring your best dame.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Jan. 15-18/ Tampa Bay Performing arts Center/ $30.50-$66.50

Here comes another Broadway/ movie musical into town — Jesus Christ … Superstar. Religious folk have always made the big J out to be some sort of rock star. Here’s more proof. This traveling version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “masterpiece” comes to town at a bad time for men. Remember all that football you watched last year while the lady complained? Time to pay the piper.
